Corpus Christi and My Weekend Away

Today is Corpus Christi, a very traditional ceremony where fifteen saints and virgins come to greet the body of Christ. There´s a huge parade in the plaza, along with tons of beer and Cusqueñan food, like chiriuchu. Chiriuchu is a cold plate filled with guinea pigs, meat, corn and various other ingredients.

I´m headed out in a few minutes to go celebrate, take pictures and enjoy the day before I head out to Arequipa tonight.

I´m going with several other volunteers to Arequipa and Colca Canyon, and I´ll be back on Monday morning.  We´re taking an overnight sleeper bus, and we´ll be staying at The Point hostel.

Arequipa is the second largest city in Peru. It´s known for its white volcanic rocks and spicy food. Colca Canyon is about 100 miles northwest of Arequipa. It´s twice as deep as the Grand Canyon, and the Andean Condor lives there.

I start my new project on Monday morning, where I´ll be helping take care of underprivileged children in a village about 30-40 minutes outside of Cusco.
